USA Swimming - Boar's Head Resort

Spring Training: April 1 - May 10, 2024

The Sports Club is excited to begin our third year of USA swimming.  Our experienced coaching staff will provide age-specific, individualized training for all athletes with an emphasis on teamwork, sportsmanship and fun. 

As the Sports Club pool renovation begins September 5, all practices will be held at Fairview Swim and Tennis Club:

All swimmers will need to bring their own towel.

Mission

Our Mission is to inspire and empower swimmers to achieve excellence in sport and life through age-specific and appropriate training for all athletes. Through coaching geared towards challenging and developing each athlete to the best of their abilities, our competitive program - overseen by Boar’s Head Lead USA Coaches Lauren Gander, Erin Lawson, Lindsey Paulson, Nate Skroban, and Mike DiFazio - exemplifies the standards and values of the sport of swimming. 

Qualifications

Participants must be able to swim a complete 25m freestyle unassisted. Children should be comfortable floating and kicking on their back as well as their front. This program is not intended to replace swim lessons. If you are new to USA Swimming or unsure of your swimmer’s current skill level, please reach out to one of our coaches. We want to find the best fit for your child(ren) and will happily arrange an individual evaluation.

Registration

In order to ensure a safe practice environment for all athletes, every participant must register via the link below. Once registered, please await a confirmation email. Our coaches will reach out to arrange specific practice times that work best for your family. Please read program descriptions thoroughly to make sure that your child is signed up for the correct program level. If you have questions, please reach out to one of the coaches listed above.

Billing

Fees are billed one week prior to each session (fall, winter and spring), with a 10% sibling discount for additional swimmers in the same family.  Withdrawal from the program must be submitted in writing to coaches at least two weeks prior to the start of the session or full fees will apply. Swimmers receive 10% off when registering for all three sessions.

Cancellations must be received in writing two weeks prior to the start of the session to receive a full refund. We understand that illness and injuries happen. If cancellation notice is given with less than two weeks’ notice, a doctor’s note must be provided to receive a 50% refund.

USA Swimming Meet Information

All programs are certified via USA Swimming. The USA season runs from September 2023 through March 2024.   Our competitive meet schedule will be announced shortly. District and State Championship meet (Age Group Champs, Senior Champs, etc) dates and locations can be found at virginiaswimming.org.   
A USA Swimming registration fee of  $98 for all athletes participating in all programs must be paid before practices begin. This required fee covers USA Swimming registration and insurance.  In addition, a registration fee will be charged by BASS  to cover admin fees as well as a t-shirt and swim cap.  We will send out a link to pay these fees in August.  
 

Mini Boarfish (K-2nd Grade – Two practices per week)

Our entry level team group; introducing young athletes to the world of competitive swimming. Prior to registering for this group, swimmers must be able to swim a complete 25m freestyle unassisted. Children should be comfortable floating and kicking on their back as well as their front. This program is not intended to replace swim lessons. Emphasis is placed on learning the basic fundamentals of competitive swimming and foundations of all four strokes. Swimmers will become familiar with what a typical swim team practice looks like, gain an understanding of general pool safety, learn how to be a good teammate, and most importantly, make friends and HAVE FUN!  Practices last 45 minutes and occur twice per week. Practice options are offered to meet your family’s schedule.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 4:45 - 5:30 p.m.

Boarfish I (2nd-4th Grade – Two practices per week) 

Primarily consists of ages 7-10. Stroke progression, starts, turns and stroke technique will be a primary focus. Our coaching staff will lay the groundwork for teamwork, basic practice etiquette, and sportsmanship. Building confidence and creating friendships are two of our biggest goals for this group. Coaches will make sure this practice group has FUN! Practices last 50 minutes and occur twice per week. Practice options are offered to meet your family’s schedule.

Schedule
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 4:30 - 5:20 p.m.

Boarfish II (4th-6th Grade – Two or three practices per week) 

Predominantly made up of ages 9 - 11. This group builds upon the swimming skills learned in Boarfish I.  Swimmers should be competent in all four strokes. Training will incorporate more advanced drills and intervals to increase overall proficiency. Further emphasis will be placed on stroke technique. Aerobic development and conditioning will be introduced at a basic level. Swimmers will be encouraged to attend practice consistently, and expectations will be increased at a developmentally appropriate rate for both attendance as well as intensity. Coaches will teach and expect participants to be safe and responsible swimmers in addition to making practice FUN! Practices last 60 minutes and occur two or three times per week. Practice options are offered to meet your family’s schedule.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Junior (Middle School – Up to four practices per week) 

Primarily made up of ages 11 - 14 with an emphasis on stroke technique, aerobic endurance, racing strategies, and dryland training. Junior swimmers should be proficient in all four strokes. This group will also be expected to show a respectful and positive attitude at practice. Multi-sport athletes are openly welcomed, as practice schedules are flexible with morning and afternoon options. Swimming in the morning (if chosen) will condition your child to a future high school practice routine. Our coaches make it a priority to encourage a lifelong love for the sport. We currently provide a twice weekly morning option for those swimmers looking to continue year-round training, but who also require flexibility with scheduling. Swimmers are encouraged to attend their practices consistently and to show support for their teammates. We believe that this age group specifically needs positive role models as they transition to high school. Morning and evening practice times are available, each lasting 90 minutes.

Pre-Senior (8th Grade and Above – up to 5 practices per week) 

Predominantly made up of ages 13 - 15. These swimmers train with a focus on stroke technique, aerobic endurance, and increasingly more complex practice sets to build upon the skills they already possess. We introduce this group to a more rigorous training program in order to prepare them to compete at a higher level, if they so desire. Swimmers in this group will receive the additional coaching necessary to be competitive in both the USA as well as local high school programs. Coaches will occasionally combine this group with the Senior/National group for practice. This encourages team camaraderie and allows  coaches to get to know more swimmers on a daily basis. Our coaches want your swimmer(s) to develop lasting friendships and will accommodate practice groups when possible so friends can swim together. Practice lasts 90 minutes to two hours, and swimmers are encouraged to attend an average of four practices per week. Many options are available in order to provide flexibility for multi-sporty athletes.. We encourage our  swimmers to participate in other activities they enjoy as well.

Senior/National (Six swim practices and 2-3 dryland practices per week) 

Primarily consists of ages 16 and older swimmers (based on coaches recommendation) who have the ability, desire, and commitment to advance their competitive swimming career. Stroke technique remains a cornerstone.  Emphasis is placed on leadership and community service, creating a positive environment for well-rounded young adults. Workouts are designed to challenge athletes to further develop technique, endurance, racing strategy, and mental fortitude with goals of qualifying as many swimmers as possible to state and national level meets.  This group includes swimmers who are training to compete at National level meets such as Futures, U.S. Open, and Olympic Trials.  Swimming in college is another main objective and assistance with the recruiting process is offered as well as obtaining USA Scholastic All American recognition. Practices last two hours and swimmers are expected to consistently commit to five or six practices per week plus two to three dryland practices. Our goal as coaches is to develop your swimmer from a holistic perspective - investing in social, academic, and athletic proficiency.
